A postdoctoral position is available immediately (4/2/2023) in the Laboratory of Ed Yu to study biology of the ribosome; mechanism of action of translational inhibitors; and interaction of small molecules with RNA in the Department of Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve. Projects are being performed collaboratively with the Kirby, Manetsch, and O'Doherty Laboratories. See recent manuscripts (PMC8805024, PMC8263017, PMC6974574)
The incoming research fellow will use x-ray crystallography/cryo-EM and other biophysical/biochemical techniques to elucidate the molecular mechanisms in these systems. Please find additional information about the Yu group and the outstanding training environment in the Case Western Department of Pharmacology website (https://case.edu/medicine/pharmacology/).
This position requires expertise in structural biology. The ideal candidate will have shown the ability to guide a project to completion, from protein expression to structural analysis. Knowledge of common structural programs (Phenix, Coot, Pymol) a must. Experience with cryo-electron microscopy sample preparation/operation/data analysis is highly desirable. Experience with single-molecule FRET and other biochemical and biophysical characterization methods would also be considered a strength.
Qualified applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD degree; strong written, oral communication, and critical thinking skills are required. As a Postdoctoral Scholar, he/she will present data at departmental seminars, prepare manuscripts, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. Preference will be given to applicants with a recognized record of accomplishment as evidenced by scholarly publications in the field of bacteriology or structural biology. Send inquiries containing a cover letter, CV with list of publications and contact information to Dr. Edward Yu (ewy5@case.edu).
Postdoctoral fellow position available immediately in the Kirby laboratory to identify and develop novel therapeutics for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens (e.g., carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter baumannii as examples). Work will consist of biological analysis of analogues under development based on several antimicrobial scaffolds of interest to address potency, Gram-negative activity spectrum, selectivity, and avoid potential resistance mechanisms, as well as advancing promising analogues through efficacy studies in murine infection models. This work will drive iterative rounds of medicinal chemistry exploration. We work closely with medicinal chemistry groups (George O’Doherty and Roman Manetsch, Northeastern University) and the structural biology group of Ed Yu (Case Western Reserve University Medical Center) inclusive of cross-mentorship of postdoctoral fellows and combined lab group meetings for our collaborative projects. Basic investigation into mechanism of action of existing and novel antimicrobials on the bacterial ribosome is also of significant interest. See https://www.kirbylab.org for overview of lab activities where a postdoctoral may additionally contribute.
Candidates must have a PhD or MD/PhD; a background in microbiology; excellent communication skills; a strong track record of published scientific achievement, and experience with or strong desire to learn how to perform in vivo infection experiments. Applicants should be achievement oriented, highly motivated, and welcome use of a variety of approaches to address medically important, challenging scientific problems. Applicants seeking a first postdoctoral experience are preferred.

The Kirby laboratory seeking motivated undergraduates and graduate students. In recent years, several undergraduates or postgraduate from Boston University, Northeastern, Wellesley, and University of Massachusetts have had very productive experiences. Several lab members also had research experiences during gap years before or during medical school.
